About the artist:

Gerrard King is a renowned local Sunshine Coast artist and painter, who’s works include private commissions of a widely varied nature, sometimes beautifully literal and true to life, but often abstract, obscure, weird and whimsical, and always executed with meticulous attention to detail.

His works also include large scale murals in restaurants & commercial businesses, (such as Ten Toes Brewery, Sunshine Coast University Hospital staff offices, Sneaky Baron, Orleans Restaurant), graphic art and branding design, and even some public table tennis for the Sunshine Coast council.

About the artwork:

MOTHERSHIP is an original painting created in a distinctive style which has been pioneered by Gerrard in some of his previous works.

In this style, a bold profile of the subject (often a creature) is imbued with a detailed floral base, highlighted with a solid black background. A layer of detailed shading is then applied over the floral body to enhance physical features of the creature and add richness to the final image.

The Floral Pattern is colourful and ornamental in nature, and unique to each painting such

that no two are ever created the same. In this case its a vintage Chrysanthemums fabric design by Philip Jacobs for Kaffe Fassett (or in the words of the artist “basically a unicorn for vintage floral design enthusiasts”).

The artwork is thus graphically striking and uplifting, with its juxtaposition of the majestic subject and its floral embodiment, triggering powerful emotional responses to both elements simultaneously…
